Because Japan’s population began declining last year and the rural-peripheral regions are bleeding into the greater agglomerations of Tokyo and Osaka, a debate about urban shrinkage has developed in Japan like that in Europe.
The exhibition "shrinking cities x fibercity @ akihabara" therefore unites two expositions – "Shrinking Cities", which was received with great interest in Europe and the USA, and "Fibercity", in which Hidetoshi Ohno presents a vision of the future of shrinking metropoles, using the example of Tokyo.
For the exhibition in Tokyo, the project Shrinking Cities has carried out a case study of the Japanese city Hakodate. The results are presented in the Tokyo and will soon be published in a digital online publication.
In the exhibition in Tokyo, models, films, animations, plans, diagrams, photographs, and texts will be shown. But the project is not limited to a presentation of exhibits; rather, a site for discussions is created at the same time. “Talk ins” will be carried out in the exhibition; there, architects and urban builders, students and representatives from administration, companies, and communities can bring their own ideas and present them to a broad audience.
To make the content of the project accessible to a Japanese-speaking audience, Shrinking Cities is publishing a 20-page exhibition newspaper in Japanese for the exhibition in Tokyo. In addition, a Japanese page was constructed for the project’s website.
