Exhibition ///
Academy of Arts, Pariser Platz 4, 10117 Berlin
October 16th until November 23rd, 2008
Open: Tue-Sun 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
From 2002 to 2008, the initiative project Shrinking Cities focused on six case studies in aging industrial countries in North America (USA), Europe (UK, Germany, Russia), and Asia (Japan) to investigate how cities with dwindling populations and dwindling economic activity develop, what problems and opportunities thereby arise, and how this often crisis-ridden development can be better shaped. More than 200 researchers, artists, and designers from 14 countries took part in the interdisciplinary project, whose results were internationally presented in 12 exhibitions and several publications and were discussed at a great number of events.
At the conclusion of the project in Fall 2008, a symposium will be held in Berlin to provide a prospect of the future development of the question. What challenges must a culture of shrinking face in the coming decades and how can culture make a substantial contribution to negotiating societal problems and conflicts?
Parallel to the workshop the exhibition „Shrinking Cities ff.“ will be shown for the first time at the Academy of Arts, expected from Oct. 16 - Nov. 23, 2008.
